The Isles of Scilly

It has often been said that a day off St. Agnes is a day wasted! But there is a lot to see and do on the Isles of Scilly, and this page offers a very brief introduction to the other islands. Often however the secret is to do as little of this as possible, and enjoy the pace of life on St. Agnes, the quiet beaches and hidden lanes, watch the sun go down and enjoy a drink at the Turks Head.

During a two week stay you always have the opportunity to visit every other island at least once and St.Mary's daily. A copy of the 'Spirit of St. Agnes' boat schedule is posted at the campsite and cottages, as well as the notice board outside the Post Office. They also run boat trips for seal and bird watching, and to the Bishop rock light house, (weather permitting).

The Isles of Scilly are famous for the migratory birds that can be seen here, and there is a great deal of wildlife to see on land, sea and in the air.

On St.Marys bicycle hire for a day is a great way to see the whole island, the quality of local art work is exceptional and there are several excellent galleries and workshops to visit. If you don't want to cycle there are regular bus tours or golf buggies to hire. Hugh Town itself has a good range of shops, pubs, restaurants and the very interesting IOS museum. For the more adventurous there is kayak/boat hire and instruction at the Sailing Centre.

The most famous landmark in Scilly is probably the world renown Tresco Abbey Gardens, and at any time of year they are quite magnificent. Tresco also has a large freshwater lake that attracts some unusual birds. There are long sandy beaches, woodland walks, and three castles to visit.

Bryher has the aptly named Hell Bay which faces directly out to the Atlantic swell, but walk a little further and you get to rushy bay, an idylic sandy beach with crystal clear water, the perfect place to spend a sunny day.

St. Martins is the furthest from St. Agnes, but has a similar island community feel which makes it a favourite. The St. Martins bakery is a real treat. There are miles of sandy beaches, with probably the best shell beaches on Scilly. A walk along the length of St. Martins is an excellent day, with several places to stop for lunch or tea along the way. Depending on the tide you can be dropped at one end and collected from the other.
